Intentions versus reality

It seems to happen a lot that what we intend to convey gets misunderstood lately. And I can't say that I'm surprised in a world where we communicate so much more silently than we do by voice. Between text messaging, emails, and facebook, it is possible to maintain a friendship for months without ever actually speaking to the other person! It makes it much easier to keep friends close when they are all over the world, to be sure, but I think maybe we use it as a crutch to avoid awkwardness and discomfort. I can't help but wonder, though, if it doesn't cause more problems than it solves. I have been making an effort to make sure that any time I have a problem or emotional issue to talk about, I make the effort to call or talk about it in person, and, for the few occasions that I have had lately to worry about it, it seems to have made a difference. Sounds make words so much better anyway!!

  1. i totally agree with you. it's so easy to hide behind social networking devices. its kind of sad, too. "real" communication gets lost.
